Petraeus Unaware of “Responsible Proposals” for Iraq Withdrawal

During today’s Congressional hearings on progress in Iraq, Rep. Tom Lantos (D-CA) told Gen. David Petraeus that “juxtaposing your token proposal [of returning to pre-surge levels by the Summer of 2008] with a hypothetical, rapid and irresponsible proposal does not do justice to this most important issue.” When Lantos asked Petraeus to discuss these “responsible proposals,” Petraeus replied that “there has been no recommendation that I’m aware of…I’m at a loss.”

But as Lantos pointed out, both retired and active military leaders have recommended substantial troop decreases in Iraq. You can read the Center for American Progress’s proposal for how “an orderly and safe withdrawal” can be conducted “over a 10- to 12-month period” here.
