Today, President Bush responded to the national day of actions and protests against the harsh prosecution of the Jena 6, “six black high school students charged with beating a white classmate unconscious.”
“The events in Louisiana have saddened me, and I understand the emotions. The Justice Department and the FBI are monitoring the situation down there. And all of us in America want there to be, you know, fairness when it comes to justice…[The next Republican presidential nominee should] reach out to the African-American community, as well as other communities, because I believe that we’ve got a very strong record when it comes to empowerment. . . .”
No word yet on whether President Bush will empower the leading contenders for the Republican nomination to attend the “All American Presidential Forum” organized by black talk show host Tavis Smiley.
